BRANDENBURG, Germany – Brianna Hennessy of Ottawa and Erica Scarff of Mississauga, Ont., won silver and bronze medals respectively this past weekend in the Para canoe events at an ICF World Cup stop.
Hennessy took the silver in the women’s VL2 200-metre race, the same event she placed second at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. She finished 1.02 seconds behind Emma Wiggs of Britain
Scarff, a 2016 and 2024 Paralympian, was third in the women’s VL3 200 . The British were 1-2 in the final with Emma Henshaw first and Hope Gordon third.
Leanne Taylor impressive fifth in comeback race
Canada’s Leanne Taylor was fifth in her first race since winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris on Saturday at the World Triathlon Para Series event in Yokohama, Japan .
The Oak Bluff, Man., resident, who took time off to have a baby boy, clocked a fifth-place time of 1:05:36 in the women’s PTWC classification.
“It felt great to be back on the course and to have Ollie there for my first race back made it even more special,” said Taylor. “It was a hard road to make to the start line by I’m so happy I did.”
Taylor was fourth out of the 750-metre swim but dropped one spot in the second lap of the 20-kilometre bike where she remained until she crossed the finish line at the end of a five-kilometre run course.
Australia’s Laren Parker won the classification with a time of 59:39. Emelia Perry, of the United States, placed second at 1:01:24. Brazil’s Jessica Ferreira finished one second back at 1:01:25 for third place.
Ontario, Quebec golden on final day of competition at 2026 National Championships
Quebec captured its fourth consecutive national title with a thrilling 61-58 victory over host British Columbia in the women’s gold medal game on Sunday afternoon at the 2026 National Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Richmond, B.C.
The tournament was part of the inaugural OneAbility Games, a multi-sport disability event showcasing Para sport from beginners to elite athletes competing at the provincial and national levels.
Cindy Ouellet paced Quebec with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds, while Élodie Tessier added 14 points and three rebounds. Meriam Fassi-Fehri also made a strong contribution with 12 points and seven rebounds as Quebec held off a push from British Columbia to secure the championship victory.
“It’s really good – defending champions for a few years now,” said Ouellet. “It was a close one. Really good fight from B.C. It was just a good game and that’s what we want in the final.
“We stuck to our plan, played on chairs and played as a team.”
Ontario won the bronze.
On the men’s side, Ontario captured a second straight national title with an 80-65 victory over Alberta in the gold medal game on Sunday.
Ibrahim Odza delivered a game-high 33 points and 12 assists, while Jesse McNalley recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds to help Ontario secure back-to-back National Championships.
“It feels great. Alberta gave us a real run for our money – we weren’t used to those tight games this tournament,” said Jesse McNalley. “They really shot well, played well and it was a tough game, tough battle, especially in foul trouble.”
Quebec earned the bronze.
Nationals in wheelchair rugby and goalball also held this past weekend
The Ontario Thunder defeated Quebec 57-47 on Sunday to win the gold medal at the Canadian Wheelchair rugby championships held this past weekend at Carleton University.
B.C., edged New Brunswick 46-42 for the bronze.
Both matched featured several Paralympians including Mike Whitehead and Travis Murao for the Thunder, Fabien Lavoie and Anthony Létourneau for Quebec and Joel Ewert and Byron Green for B.C.
At the Canadian Goalball Championships in Abbotsford- Team Nova Scotia, Alberta and B.C., were 1-2-3 in men’s play.
Ontario took the women’s crown for the 17th straight year. That team featured Paralympians Amy Burk and Emma Reinke.
