Joel Ewert is a remarkable Canadian athlete excelling in both Wheelchair rugby and Wheelchair basketball. But it has been in Wheelchair rugby where he has excelled and recently been selected to represent Canada at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, marking his debut at the Paralympic Games. Born with cerebral palsy, Ewert has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in his sports career.
Ewert first caught the attention of rugby coaches while competing for Team BC in wheelchair basketball at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. His talent and determination led him to start playing wheelchair rugby, and he quickly made a name for himself in the sport. By 2017, he had become a part of the national wheelchair rugby team, showcasing his abilities on an international level.
In April 2024, Ewert was a key member of Team Canada at the last-chance wheelchair rugby Paralympic Games qualifying event, where the team secured a silver medal and booked their ticket to Paris. His participation in this event highlights his crucial role in the team’s success and his readiness for the upcoming Paralympics.
Ewert’s career is also marked by his achievements in wheelchair basketball. He was a member of Team Canada at the 2023 Men’s U23 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship and has competed in three Canada Winter Games for Team BC, demonstrating his versatility and commitment across multiple sports.
Beyond his athletic pursuits, Ewert is dedicated to his academic and professional development. He completed his first degree in biomedical studies at the University of Northern British Columbia and has been accepted into the University of British Columbia’s Northern Medical Program in Prince George. His academic accomplishments reflect his determination and ambition, both on and off the court.
