Five-time Paralympic Games medallist Mac Marcoux celebrates the support of the Paralympic Foundation of Canada (PFC) and its donors for helping him transform challenges into triumphs throughout his illustrious career. From podium finishes on the world stage to overcoming injuries, Marcoux’s journey is a testament to the power of the Circle of Champions, the PFC’s donor community, on backing him in his pursuit of becoming a champion.

“Your generosity has had an impact on the lives of many athletes like me,” says Marcoux. “Even when the road is long and full of obstacles, your support made it so I could chase my dream. With your help, we’re making history together.”

Marcoux’s story is one of determination, resilience, and the belief that barriers can be broken with the right support. Diagnosed with Stargardt disease at the age of nine, he was declared legally blind by 2007. Yet, instead of letting his diagnosis define him, Marcoux leaned into a love of speed nurtured by his family, transitioning from driving go-karts to skiing down slopes at over 100 kilometres per hour.

With his older brother Billy Joe (BJ) guiding him, Marcoux began competing in Para alpine skiing in 2011. Their partnership quickly ascended to the world stage, earning World Cup podiums and a silver medal at the 2013 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships. By 2014, the pair stood atop the Paralympic podium in Sochi, where Marcoux claimed his first gold medal along with two bronze.

Each victory represented not just personal achievement but the collective support of the Para sport community, including donors to the PFC. Marcoux acknowledges that resources funded through donations made an impact on his career, such as helping him purchase cutting-edge equipment, access coaching, and funding specialized training opportunities, that were vital to his performance.

“These accomplishments would not have been possible without the support I receive from people like the Circle of Champions,” Marcoux shares. “Your donations help fund the resources, technology, training, and equipment that are essential for athletes like me to perform at our best.”

The journey hasn’t been without setbacks. Marcoux has faced numerous injuries, including knee surgeries and herniated discs, that sidelined him for key seasons. Yet, his resilience never wavered. With new guide Tristan Rodgers, he achieved an undefeated 2019-2020 World Cup season, securing his 50th career podium and cementing his legacy as one of Canada’s most decorated Para athletes.

Marcoux’s commitment to the sport extends beyond personal accolades. He emphasizes the broader impact of donor support, which paves the way for the next generation of athletes to reach their potential.

“You are not just helping athletes break records on the podium—you are breaking barriers and creating a more inclusive world for all,” he says.

As Marcoux looks to the future, his gratitude for the PFC and its supporters remains at the forefront of his message. “Your belief in me and the other athletes who are striving for excellence means more than words can express. Every donation, no matter the size, helps IGNITE potential and allows us to keep pushing forward, toward our dreams and toward a more inclusive future.”
