Weekend recap: Stefan Daniel repeats podium finish at Para Triathlon Cup

TATA, Hungary – Calgary’s Stefan Daniel reached the podium for the second straight weekend in international Para triathlon on Saturday, earning the bronze medal at the Para Triathlon Cup.

European champion Bence Mocsari of Hungary took the gold in the PTS5 class in 55 minutes and 26 seconds. Filip Marques of Portugal followed in 55.42 and Daniel clocked 56.41. He was Canada’s lone competitor at the event.

For Daniel, it was his 51^st medal in 70 career starts. That includes six world titles. He was second after the swim, first after the bike portion and posted the fourth fastest time in the run split.

Last week in Hamburg, Germany, Daniel, a two-time Paralympic Games medallist, won the silver medal at the World Para Triathlon Series event.

Brent Lakatos fourth at Diamond League

(Sportcom) Canadian wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos of Dorval, Que., finished fourth in the men’s T54 1,500 metres on Saturday at the Diamond League meet in London.

While the result left him wanting more, Lakatos said he is encouraged by the progress he has made since returning to full training earlier this year after taking an extended break in 2025.

“It’s acceptable considering this is the year I’m ramping my training back up,” Lakatos told Sportcom.

“My workouts are getting longer, more demanding and the speed is coming back. For where I am right now, it was a good race.”

Lakatos, a 13-time Paralympic Games medallist, crossed the line in three minutes 0.34 seconds, just 0.14 seconds behind the bronze medallist. He stayed with the lead pack until the final sprint but said his next goal is to improve his speed and endurance so he can dictate the pace while still having enough left to accelerate over the closing metres.

His focus is already on next year’s World Para Athletics Championships and the 2028 Paralympic Games.

Switzerland’s Marcel Hug, the Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallist in the T54 1,500 m, won the race in 2:59.24. Australians Samuel Carter and Samuel Rizzo rounded out the podium.
