Dandeneau, Canada, through to the semifinals at World Championships

OTTAWA (Wheelchair Basketball Canada) Kady Dandeneau paced Team Canada, scoring a double-double and leading the Senior Women’s National Team to an 88-68 win over Japan in Wednesday’s quarterfinal at the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.

With the win, Canada punched its ticket to Thursday’s semifinals where they’ll meet the Netherlands at 7:15 p.m. EDT.

“I think we’re all pretty excited to be in the semis,” said Rosie Long. “We pushed through.

“We’re super happy to be moving forward.”

Dandeneau scored a game-high 49 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and added eight assists. Arinn Young added a double-double of 30 points and 11 assists as the SWNT improved to a perfect 6-0 in Ottawa.

“We came out really strong,” said Cindy Ouellet. “Still have a lot to work on for tomorrow, but great team win, and we’re pretty happy we’re going to semifinals.”

Canada finished the game shooting 67 per cent from the field, while holding Japan to 45 per cent shooting. The Canadians also controlled the paint, holding a 46–18 advantage in points in the paint and converting 16 points off Japan turnovers.

Team Canada will use its preparation time before Thursday’s semifinal to make some adjustments.

“We’ve got to make chair contact and work together,” Tara Llanes said. “Be able to slide and make those rotations on defence a little quicker than we were, and I think we’ll be good.”

Canada held a 66-54 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Dandeneau paced the offence with 33 points on 13-of-20 shooting through three periods. Young added 26 points while going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Team Canada shot an efficient 62 per cent over 30 minutes and held a lead as large as 17 points despite Japan’s third-quarter push.

The SWNT led 39-26 at the break.

Dandeneau scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting through the opening 20 minutes, and Young added while going 7-of-10 from the field.

Team Canada shot 57 per cent from the field through the opening 20 minutes.

Defensively, the SWNT limited Japan to 41 per cent shooting.

Dandeneau and Young had 12 points each as Canada out-scored Japan 26-12 in the opening period.
