NYMBURK, Czechia – Canada captured its first International Para Hockey Cup gold medal Saturday with a 5-1 victory over the United States as veteran defenceman Adam Dixon set a national hockey team record for career games played.
Dixon, 37, of Midland, Ont., appeared in his 277th game for Canada, surpassing women’s hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser, who played 276 games between 1994 and 2016.
Dixon has collected 291 points (110 goals, 181 assists) over his 20-year international career.
“If you asked my family at 10 years old when I’m diagnosed with cancer that I’m going to play 20 years representing our country and travelling all over the world playing the wonderful sport of hockey, holy smokes, what a dream that would be,” said Dixon. “That’s exactly what happened. I got to play with incredible players, incredible coaches and see so many things through victory and defeat.
“The person I am today is all because of hockey.”
Canada broke open a scoreless game with three second-period goals from Auren Halbert, Branden Sison and Vincent Boily.
James Dunn and Anton Jacobs-Webb added third-period goals after the Americans scored on a power play.
Jean-François Huneault made 14 saves and was named Canada’s player of the game.
Canada’s National Para Hockey Team returns to Calgary for a training camp in mid-November ahead of the 2026 Para Cup, Nov. 29-Dec 5, in Paradise, N.L. The top-four in the world are entered: U.S., Canada, China and Czechia. Fans can purchase 10-game tournament package at HockeyCanada.ca/Tickets.
Canada’s Spencer Arnold defeats Paralympic champion for gold at Para archery championships
Spencer Arnold of Chilliwack, B.C., defeated reigning Paralympic champion Jason Tabansky of the United States to win the men’s W1 gold medal Sunday as Canada concluded the 2026 Para Pan American Archery Championships in Lima with three medals and three qualification spots for next year’s Parapan American Games.
Arnold’s victory over the Paris 2024 Paralympic champion highlighted a strong Canadian performance that also included a silver medal in the men’s W1 doubles with Daniel Comeau of Shannon, Que.
Comeau added a bronze medal in the individual men’s W1 event earlier in the competition in his first major championship since moving into the classification.
“It was an amazing experience shooting with all of these world-class archers,” said Arnold. “I am so grateful to be here showing what I am capable of. I can’t wait for the next one. Go Canada!”
Canada also secured quota spots in all three men’s categories contested by the team – W1, recurve and compound – for the 2027 Parapan American Games, also scheduled for Lima.
“Earning three quota spots for the Parapan American Games is a tremendous achievement for our archery program and a reflection of the hard work our athletes and coaches have put in,” said Kylah Cawley, Archery Canada’s high performance manager.
In men’s recurve, Shawn Matheson of Ottawa placed ninth and Jean-François Lavergne of St. Raymond, Que., was 16th.
Paralympian Kyle Tremblay of Deep River, Ont. Was seventh in men’s compound while Chris Waterman of Winnipeg was 13th.
