Canadian women advance to quarterfinals at 2026 Sitting Volleyball World Championships

Men’s team lose round of 16 match

HANGZHOU, China (Volleyball Canada) The Canadian women’s team has advanced to the quarter-finals following a 3-0 win over France (25-10, 25-12, 25-14) in round of 16 play at the 2026 Sitting Volleyball World Championships.

“I think overall we performed well,” said Canada’s Anna Dunn “We had some moments where we a little bit lethargic and were sluggish, but we came back into the game. I think we did really good job bouncing back from uncharacteristic mistakes. It’s great that we have such an amazing group of girls and a fantastic support staff and coaches who pull us back in together.”

After four matches, 2024 Paris bronze medalist Canada remains unbeaten in the tournament.

Canada, ranked number two in the world, will face ninth-ranked Iran in a quarter-final match on July 15 at 3:30 a.m. EDT.

In men’s play, Canada moves onto the classification matches to determine its final placement (ninth to 16th) in the tournament after losing its round of 16 match against the United States 0-3 (22-25,16-25, 23-25).

“In today’s game, I thought we played really hard. We played as a unit with a lot of heart,” said Canada’s Andrew Tucker. “We came up short in a couple of the sets. I think it’s still a good stepping stone for moving forward for our next tournament and practices. I think going forward we have an excellent trajectory.”

The Canadian men are back on the court for a match against Croatia on July 15 in China or July 14 at 9:30 p.m. EDT.

With the win over Canada, the American men’s team is guaranteed a top-eight finish in the tournament and secures direct qualification to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

All 32 teams will continue to play in the tournament for both championship honours and final placings in classification matches. The men’s and women’s finals will be played on July 17. The tournament is the first opportunity for teams to secure qualification for the 2028 Paralympic Games, with the men’s and women’s top two earning direct qualification places.
