PARIS- It wasn’t meant to be for the Canadian Men’s wheelchair basketball team, as they finished up the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris with a fourth place finish, following a 75-62 loss to Germany in the Bronze medal game.

Coming off their semi-final loss to the Americans, Canada was expected to beat Germany for the second time in the tournament, after a 68-52 win in the Preliminary Round.

Canada took an early 9-2 lead in the first quarter, holding Germany to just 11 points in the quarter, eventually taking a 35-27 lead to the locker room at halftime with a chance to win the bronze.

However, it was Germany who found their offensive touch in the second half, particularly in the fourth, where they scored 28 points en route to the 13-point victory.

Patrick Anderson led Canada with 31 points and 6 rebounds in what is likely to be his final match at the Paralympic Games, while Nik Goncin chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Thomas Boehme scored a game-high for the Germans with 36 points, while Nico Dreimuller had 15 points, and Matthias Guntner finished with a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds.

As a team, Canada shot 42% from the field, while Germany was better, shooting 50% from the floor. Canada was the better team from the three-point line, hitting 4 of 14 (29%) from beyond the arc, compared to Germany who shot 1 for 8 (13%). Germany did out-rebound the Canadians 40-34, and had a 20-16 advantage in assists as well.

Canada was looking for its first podium finish in Men’s wheelchair basketball since the 2012 Paralympic Games, when they last won the Gold medal. Regardless, this was Canada’s best finish since 2012, after finishing 8th in the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball squad will take on China for the Bronze medal on Sunday at 4:30PM EST.
