Para sport update: Canada drops opener at 2026 Wheelchair Rugby World Championships

Winter sports international schedules announced

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Canada lost 50-41 to Australia on Monday in the opening game at the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby World Championships.

Australian head coach Lewis Quinn was impressed by the Canadian squad.

“It was a tough game, Canada came out really strong, they played a really solid game, but I was super happy with how our team responded,” he said.

Canada faces No 7 Brazil Tuesday, third-ranked USA Wednesday and play two matches Thursday against 13th ranked the Netherlands and No 10 New Zealand.  The quarterfinals are Friday, the semifinals Saturday and the medal matches Sunday, August 23.

Canada to host Para snowboard world championships in 2027

Mont-Ste-Anne, Que., will host the 2027 Para snowboard World Championships March 15-21 as FIS announced its schedule for its Para sports – Para snowboard, Para cross country skiing and Para alpine.

The ski station just north of Quebec City hosts the worlds for the first time and follows the World Cup Final which is set for Big White, B.C., March 8-9.

The Para snowboard World Cup circuit has six stops with its traditional opener November 26-27, 2026 at the indoor venue in Langraaf, the Netherlands.

There are no Canadian stops on the seven-stop Para alpine and four-stop Para cross country circuits.

Also announced, the 2027 Wheelchair Curling World Championships and the Mixed Doubles Wheelchair Curling World Championships will be held in Lohja, Finland.

The team worlds are February 20-27 and the mixed doubles worlds are March 1-8.  Canada of course is the reigning Paralympic Games champions in the team event.
