PARIS – Danielle Dorris defended her title in the 50m butterfly S7 on Saturday to cap off a strong ten days for Canada in the pool at Paris 2024.
The 21-year-old finished in 33.62 for her second Paralympic gold medal, having set a world record in the event at Tokyo 2020 with a time of 32.99. Canadian Tess Routliffe also swam in the race, finishing in fourth.
The win brings Canada to a total of five Para swimming gold medals at the Paris games—the most since Beijing 2008, where they earned seven.
Elsewhere, 28-year-old Shelby Newkirk earned bronze in the 100m backstroke S6 for her first career Paralympic medal. The Saskatoon native finished with a time of 1:22.24.
Newkirk also swam alongside Aurelie Rivard, Alexander Elliot, and Reid Maxwell in the finals of the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay 34pts. Canada finished eighth with a time of 4:13.17.
With a two-medal day to wrap up Para swimming action, Canada finishes with a strong showing of 13 total medals in the pool over ten days of competition—with five gold, four silver, and four bronze.
This represents their highest total in 12 years, since earning 16 medals at London 2012.
Earlier in the day, more Canadian Para swimmers were in action, but unfortunately did not make it through to the finals.
Fernando Lu and Alexander Elliot swam in the men’s 200m individual medley SM10 and both placed sixth in their respective heats.
Katie Cosgriffe followed in the women’s 200m IM, placing fifth in her heat. Reid Maxwell swam in the men’s 100m butterfly S8 heats, also finishing fifth.
Clémence Paré and Hannah Ouellette swam in the heats for the women’s 200m individual medley SM5, finishing fifth and sixth in their respective races.
