Nathan Clement has returned to the international Para sport scene, this time in Para cycling. He is now a three-time world champion and Paralympic Games medallist in Para cycling.
In 2024, Clement won the silver medal in the men’s T1 time trial at the Paralympic Games in Paris. Later that September, he took gold in both the time trial and road race at the UCI World Road Championships in Zurich.
Clement won the gold medal in men’s T1 (three-wheel) time trial road event at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships held in Glasgow, Scotland and added a bronze in the road race.
Later in 2023, he took gold in the T1-2 time trial and bronze in the road race at the Parapan American Games.
On the World Cup Para road circuit in 2024, Clement added four medals (two bronze, two silver) in six races.
The West Vancouver resident made a spectacular debut in the sport in 2022. He grabbed silver medals in the time trial and road race in his international debut on the World Cup circuit in Quebec City. Then that same month, he repeated the exploit at the 2022 Para Cycling Road World Championships held in Baie-Comeau, Que.
Clement was initially a Para swimmer and competed at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. He retired from the sport in 2018. In 2020 he did a 1,000 km trek on his bike through B.C., and it ignited his competitive passions again. Thus began his Para cycling journey, though injuries to his hip and ankle set him back months in his development.
At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, he finished 7th in the 50m butterfly (Canadian record) and 18th in the 50m freestyle.
Clement’s first career international medal came at the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games with a bronze in the 50m butterfly. A few weeks earlier, he had gained valuable experience as a member of Team Canada at the world championships.
At age 15, Clement took swimming lessons to help him regain mobility in his left side after suffering a stroke caused by chicken pox at age two.
