Paris 2024 Day 5 Preview: Seven sports up for Canadian Paralympic Team

With seven days remaining in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the Canadian Paralympic Team is gearing up for another action-packed day. Canadian athletes will be competing in seven sports on Day 5, Monday September 2:  

Para Swimming  
It will be a jam-packed day at the pool, with nine swimmers racing in morning heats.  

Sabrina Duchesne will get things underway for the Canadian team in the women’s 400m freestyle S7 heats at 9:46 a.m. CEST / 3:36 a.m. ET. She will be followed by Nikita Ens and Aly Van Wyck-Smart in the women’s 50m backstroke S3, Nicholas Bennett (already a silver medallist in Paris) in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB14, and Nicolas-Guy Turbide in the men’s 50m freestyle S13.  

Closing out the morning will be Shelby Newkirk, Fernando Lu, Katie Cosgriffe, and Reid Maxwell in the mixed 4x100m medley relay at 11:46 a.m. CEST / 5:46 a.m. ET.  

For Duchesne, Ens, Wyck-Smart, and Turbide it will be their first event of the Paris 2024 Games.  

Finals will start at 5:30 p.m. CEST / 11:30 a.m. ET.  

Para Triathlon  
The Para triathlon events, originally scheduled for Sunday, have been rescheduled to Monday with the same starting times. Leading off for Canada will be Leanne Taylor, making her Paralympic debut. Taylor will race in the women’s wheelchair category starting at 8:20 a.m. CEST / 2:20 a.m. ET. 

Stefan Daniel, a five-time world champion and two-time Paralympic medallist (silver, bronze), will then race in the men’s PTS5 at 12:20 p.m. CEST / 6:20 a.m. ET. Starting just 15 minutes later will be Kamylle Frenette in the women’s PTS5. Frenette, ranked No. 2 in the world, is competing at her second Games.  

Para Athletics  
Austin Smeenk will race in the men’s T34 100m final at 11:24 a.m. CEST / 5:24 a.m. ET. Smeenk, looking for his first Paralympic medal in his third Games, has been enjoying a career season with world records in the 400m and 800m distances. He is a 2023 world championships silver medallist in the 100m.  

In the evening, Brent Lakatos will compete in the men’s T54 1500m heats at 9:25 p.m. CEST / 3:25 p.m. ET. He was a silver medallist in this race at the Tokyo 2020 Games and world championships last year. It is Lakatos’s third race of the Games with a silver medal and seventh place so far.  

Wheelchair Rugby  
Canada will conclude its wheelchair rugby tournament on Monday, with the team playing in the fifth-place match versus France at 5:30 p.m. CEST / 11:30 a.m. ET. A victory would match their performance from the Tokyo 2020 Games.  

Sitting Volleyball 
Canada’s women’s sitting volleyball team finishes its group play with a game against Rwanda at 6 p.m. CEST / 12 p.m. ET. With a 1-1 record, they are currently second in Group B with the top two finishers advancing into the semifinals.  

Wheelchair Tennis  
Rob Shaw will challenge the No. 2 seed, Niels Vink of Netherlands in the quad singles quarterfinals in wheelchair tennis action at 12 p.m. CEST / 6 a.m. ET. Shaw, who picked up an opening victory on Saturday, has dropped his last six matches to Vink.  

Wheelchair Basketball  
The Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team will take on Germany at 4 p.m. CEST / 11 a.m. ET for its final preliminary game in Paris. Currently 1-1, the team will look for a strong performance to bring into the quarterfinals later this week. All eight teams in the tournament will compete in the elimination stage.
