Peter Isherwood has been nominated to represent Canada in the sport of Para table tennis at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Table Tennis Canada announced Friday.
Paris 2024 Canadian Paralympic Team – PARA TABLE TENNIS
Isherwood will be making his Paralympic debut at the age of 47, and will become the first Canadian athlete in a wheelchair classification to compete in Para table tennis at the Games. The men’s Class 2 player is a two-time Parapan Am Games competitor from Lima 2019 and Santiago 2023. He is currently ranked world No. 49 in his category.
“When I got the call that I’m going to Paris, I was at a loss for words,” said Isherwood, Table Tennis Canada’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2022. “So much gets devoted to the sport you love, and the Paralympics is the ultimate goal. I’m so thankful to everyone who helped along the way. I look forward to representing this amazing country on the biggest stage in Para sport.”
Isherwood gained his nomination for Paris through bipartite allocation via the International Table Tennis Federation. He will compete in the men’s wheelchair Class 2 singles tournament, taking place September 1-5 at South Paris Arena.
“Peter’s journey as an athlete has been one of unwavering dedication and positivity,” said Dejan Papic, High Performance Consultant, Table Tennis Canada and Para Head Coach. “The Paralympic dream has lived in Peter for a long time, and I’m thrilled he’s found table tennis as his path to make it a reality. Over the past two years, we’ve witnessed his relentless pursuit of improvement, overcoming every obstacle with determination. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to the ITTF Para Committee for recognizing Peter’s exceptional efforts and granting him this opportunity.”
“Congratulations to Peter on being nominated for his first Paralympic Games,” said Josh Vander Vies, co-chef de mission, Paris 2024 Canadian Paralympic Team. “It is an incredible accomplishment to become a Paralympian, and I have no doubt Peter will do Canada proud. I wish him the best of luck and a wonderful Games experience, and look forward to supporting him in Paris.”
“I am so thrilled to welcome Peter to the Canadian Paralympic Team,” said Karolina Wisniewska, co-chef de mission, Paris 2024 Canadian Paralympic Team. “I really enjoyed watching our Para table tennis team compete at the Parapan Am Games last fall, and it is so great to see Peter earn a place at the Paralympic Games. I can’t wait to cheer him on in Paris.”
