Para sport Notebook: Canadian Para archers win three medals at Americas Cup

MORELIA, Mexico – Invictus Games alumni Daniel Comeau of Shannon, Que., took silver in the men’s open compound then combined forces with Paralympian Kyle Tremblay of Deep River, Que., in men’s recurve open doubles for another runner-up finish at the inaugural Americas Cup Para archery competition.

Jean-François Lavergne of St-Raymond, Que., and Shawn Matheson of Carp, Ont., a three-time Paralympian in Para ice hockey, were third in the same recurve doubles event.

‘’I didn’t think I would go that far,’’ said Comeau on Instagram. ‘’I’m happy I worked so hard to be in this place at this moment in my life. I’m grateful.’’

In a bid to give its Para archers more competitive opportunities the circuit was launched with this first event in Morelia, Mexico. The second stop is scheduled for August 27-31 in Chicago.

Canada opens against Team World at women’s Para ice hockey world championships

The scheduled has been announced for the inaugural women’s Para ice hockey world championships and Canada opens the tournament against Team World.

The six-team tournament runs August 26-31 in Dolny Kubin, Slovakia.

After its opening match August 26, the Canadians face Great Britain August 28 to complete the preliminary round. The semifinals are August 30 and the medal games August 31.

The other pool is comprised of USA, Norway and Australia. Team World is a squad composed of players from multiple nationalities.

Swimming Canada announces coaches for Paralympic program

Swimming Canada welcomed five coaches to the 2025 Select Coaches roster for the Paralympic programs. They are:

Ryan Jones – Saskatoon Lasers Swim Club
Dave Tontini – Oakville Aquatic Club
Jy Lawrence – Pacific Sea Wolves Swim Club
Nikki Van Noord – McGill Swimming
Haley Bennett – High Performance Centre – Quebec

Bennett was recently named head coach at Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre – Quebec.

‘’The Select Coaches program is designed to elevate Canadian coaches who will support the next generation of Canadian swimmers,’’ said Swimming Canada.
