Para sport Notebook: Canada’s Stefan Daniel and women’s goalball team win silver at international events
Canada’s wheelchair rugby team undefeated so far at Americas Tournament
MAGOG, Que. – Two-time Paralympic Games medallist Stefan Daniel posted the fastest running time to emerge with the silver in the men’s PTS5 class on Saturday at the World Triathlon Para Cup.
Paralympic Games champion Chris Hammer of the U.S., took the gold medal in 1:00:03 followed by the Canadian in 1:01.33. Australia’s David Bryant was third at 1:02:55.
‘’It was okay, but not the greatest,’’ said Daniel, a six-time world champion who was third in May at his season opening international event in Japan. ‘’Being the first year after the Paralympics, I’m managing the amount of travel I do and being away from home racing.’’
The 28-year-old was fourth after the 750-metre swim portion and ranked second in the 18.9 kilometre cycling race which featured two steady climbs. In the five kilometre run he gained seven more seconds on Hammer clocking 16:34.
“This year, it is all about building towards the world championships,’’ said Daniel, born bilateral radial club hands. ‘’I snuck in there for second today, and I hope to build on this for next week in Montreal.”
Olivier Desloges of Drummondville, Que., was fifth in the men’s visually impaired race and Casey Kidson of Kingston, Ont., fourth in women’s PTS4.
Daniel and the other Canadians are back in action on Friday for the next stop in the World Triathlon Para Series, set for Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal.

Shorthanded Canadian wheelchair rugby one win away from qualifying for world championships
With only eight players in the line-up, Canada’s wheelchair rugby team has delivered a stellar performance so far at the Americas Championships in Sao Paulo.
The Canadians went 3-0 in the preliminary round defeating Chile 64-22, Colombia 50-48 and Paraguay 53-25.
They will now face Brazil in Monday’s semifinal at 4 p.m. (all times ET). If Canada wins, it earns a berth at next year’s world championships, also in Sao Paulo. The top-two teams, other than Brazil, qualify.
All games are live streamed on the WWR YouTube channel. The Brazilians went 2-1 in the prelims. The other semi pits the U.S. against Colombia. The championship game is Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Canada’s squad includes six Paris Paralympians: Rio Kanda Kovac and Eric Rodrigues, both of Toronto, Matt Debly of Windsor, Ont., Cody Caldwell of Peterborough, Ont., Tony Létourneau of Montreal and Byron Green of Victoria.
Also on the squad is six-time Paralympian Patrice Simard of Quebec City. Yan Racicot of Montreal is the eighth player.
