Middle distance runner Nathan Riech has captured Canada’s first gold medal of the Lima 2019 Parapan Am Games, crossing the line first in the T37/38 1500m race. He won in a Parapan Am Games record time of 4:03.72. This is his first Parapan Am Games medal, in his maiden multi-sport Games appearance.

Canada’s Liam Stanley won the silver medal with a T37 Parapan Am record time of 4:12.13, while Mitchell Chase finished fifth.

“I was happy with my execution,” said Riech. “I wanted to run faster but I was aiming for the world record. First I wanted the Parapan Am record. I wanted to set up the race so me and Liam could medal and hopefully Mitchell could also get a medal. I like to go out hard because for me there is a bigger gap if I lose air in the last 100.”
