Alexis Guimond adds bronze in men’s standing race

TIGNES, France – Calgary’s Kurt Oatway controlled the 2,100-metre Stade de Lognan course Thursday with a masterful race to win the men’s sitting downhill at the seventh stop on the Para alpine skiing World Cup circuit.

Oatway, the 2018 Paralympic Games downhill champion, clocked one minute and 11.08 seconds for the victory. Jeroen Kampschreur of the Netherlands was second in 1:11.77 and Jesper Pedersen of Norway third in 1:11.93.

It was Oatway’s second win this season after missing the three pre-Christmas World Cups due to injury. The 42-year-old entered Thursday’s race having won both downhill training runs this week as well as the silver in the first downhill on Wednesday.

Oatway is eager to get back to the Paralympic Games next month. In 2022, he missed the Games after sustaining an injury at the world championships the previous month. Since then, he has posted some of the best performances of his career leading into Milano Cortina 2026. In 2024-25 he earned nine World Cup medals including three victories.

Brian Rowland of Merrickville, Ont., was 10th.

In the men’s standing downhill, Robin Cuche of Switzerland was the victor in 1:11.06, Arthur Bauchet of France second in 1:12.18 and Alexis Guimond of Gatineau, Que., third in 1:12.28.

Guimond, a two-time Paralympic Games medallist, is also delivering an outstanding season heading into Milano Cortina. He has four World Cup wins this season, including his first career downhill victory last month and 11 medals overall.

Mikaela Gosselin of Collingwood, Ont., was sixth in the women’s standing downhill.

The competition ends Friday with the Super G races.
