Canada’s Greg Stewart won the gold medal in the Men’s Shot put F46 final on Day 7 of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, successfully defending his title from the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
Stewart’s season-best throw of 16.38m on his fifth attempt was more than enough to beat India’s Sachin Sarjerao Khilari (16.32m), while Luka Bakovic (16.27m) from Croatia took the Bronze at Stade de France.
After winning gold in Tokyo in 2020 with a record-breaking throw of 16.75m, the 38-year-old announced his retirement from competition in 2022.
After a year away, he made the choice to come back and compete again, earning a 2024 Paralympic Games spot for Canada with a silver medal at the Para athletics world championships in Kobe, Japan in May.
“I wanted to come back, I wanted to continue supporting the Paralympic Movement, and continue to support athletes however we can,” Stewart said regarding his decision to come back, and admitted he’s not done just yet. “I’m still planning for L.A., this is just halfway there.”
After winning his second Paralympic gold medal, Stewart has big plans for the rest of the year as well, “I get married in 20 days, so I’ll probably celebrate by marrying my best friend, and then maybe taking some time off.”
