Dr. Robert Steadward Honoured by Mount Royal University for Transformational Impact on Para Sport

The founding President of the International Paralympic Committee adds another accolade to his illustrious career of dedication to the Paralympic Movement.

The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) is proud to celebrate Dr. Robert Steadward, PhD, as a recipient of the 2025 Honorary Doctor of Laws from Mount Royal University, awarded in recognition of his groundbreaking leadership in sport and lifelong contributions to equity, inclusion, and global disability advocacy.

A tireless champion for the rights of athletes with disabilities, Dr. Steadward has been instrumental in shaping the modern Paralympic Movement, both in Canada and around the world. As the founding President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), he helped unify international disability sport under one global body, setting the stage for the growth, professionalism, and recognition of Paralympic sport as we know it today.

In Canada, Dr. Steadward’s influence is equally profound. He played a key role in the development of national Para sport organizations and led foundational efforts to promote inclusive sport systems at all levels. His work has elevated countless athletes, opened doors to accessible participation, and shifted perceptions of disability through the lens of excellence, resilience, and achievement.

Mount Royal University highlighted Dr. Steadward’s remarkable legacy, calling him a visionary whose leadership “paved the way for inclusive sports opportunities worldwide.”

His legacy continues to shape sport policy, athlete development, and community inclusion, and his mentorship has empowered generations of advocates and leaders across the Paralympic Movement. In recognition of his impact, Dr. Steadward has previously been inducted into the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Steadward’s receipt of this honorary degree is a testament to the transformative power of sport and the enduring impact of inclusive leadership. His life’s work serves as a reminder that when sport is made accessible to all, greatness follows.
