Strong start for Canada’s Para ice hockey team at worlds
Canada’s Paralympians are staying busy, training, back to competing, sharing their stories and opinions on social media, and more. We will check in regularly with what the nation’s Para athletes have been up to and share some of the top highlights here.
Here’s a quick look at some recent updates:
It was a super start to the World Cup season for Canada’s Para triathletes last weekend in Spain. Stefan Daniel, a silver medallist at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, took gold while Kamylle Frenette added a bronze as did as Jessica Tuomela and her guide Marianne Hogan in their respective categories.

Canada’s Para ice hockey team returned to action for the first time in 491 days at the World Para Ice Hockey Championships on Saturday and defeated archrival the United States 2-1 in the tournament opener.

The squad remained undefeated with another triumph a day later. New team member Auren Halbert scored his first career Team Canada goal Sunday in an 8-0 win over South Korea.

Of course, later this summer there’ll be another big event for Para athletes, with the Paralympic Games set for August 24 to September 5. Canadian athletes like sprinter Marissa Papaconstantinou are now adjusting the small details to arrive ready for Tokyo.

Another track and field athlete to keep an eye on in Tokyo is seven-foot-two shotputter Greg Stewart, who is already posting strong early season numbers.
Less than two weeks ago, retired Para swimming champion Benoit Huot and current national women’s wheelchair basketball team member Cindy Ouellet were named Personalities of the Decade by Sports-Québec at its annual gala.
