Toronto 2015
When Ray Gauthier joined the Canadian men’s sitting volleyball team in 2012 he brought plenty of playing experience. He had played the able-bodied version of the game while at Grant McEwen College before a farming accident resulted in a loss of a leg in his second-year at the school in 1989. Ten years later he returned to the sport in para-standing volleyball. In 2011, a friend called to see his level of interest for the sitting game. He participated in some practices and by the spring of 2012 he tried out for the national team.
Gauthier found the sitting game very different and said it took a couple of months to get accustomed to the movements, serving technique and speed of the game. He says it’s been a positive experience for himself in order to regain his fitness and it has also inspired his family to be active. His wife races in triathlons and his kids are more involved in sport.
