Matthieu Hébert made his major Games debut in Rio and earned a 10th place finish in the men’s A epee event. Hébert started fencing as a youngster and at age 13 he suffered an injury which caused one leg to be shorter than the other. He didn’t compete in the sport for many years after that, and incredibly only decided to return to fencing less than three years before the Rio Games, first in able-bodied competition. It was wheelchair fencing national coach Iulian Badea who discovered Hébert had a disability and suggested he try the wheelchair version.
