At age 18, defenceman Mathieu Lelièvre was named to Canada’s team for the 2024 Para ice hockey world championships. While he didn’t see any action he returned for the 2025 worlds and was in the starting line-up for all five games, scoring one goal.

Lelièvre is an above-knee amputee. He lost his left leg due to cancer at a young age. He began playing Para hockey not long after the amputation at age seven. As a child he was already active in many sports.

In Para ice hockey, he was developed through local and provincial programs in Quebec before being recruited for Canada’s Para hockey development team.

Coaches were impressed with his speed, agility, and offensive instincts on the ice and his dedication to the sport, relocating to Montreal from the Quebec City area to focus on training at a high level.

Off the ice, he is a strong scholar and received multiple scholarships from organizations like the Fondation de l’athlète d’excellence (FAEQ) for balancing school and sport. He is pursuing studies in Arts, Letters, and Communications, aspiring to work in sports media as a journalist.
