Marie Wright helped Canada to the bronze medal in wheelchair curling at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

She was named for the first time to Canada’s national team in December 2016. She was selected as second to skip Jim Armstrong for the 2017 World Wheelchair Curling Championships set for Gangneung, South Korea, the site for the sport at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

She began her quest for a world team spot in July 2016 at a tryout camp. Then she solidified her selection with a strong performance at a tournament in November. Wright was ranked among the top-three in all statistical categories in the selection process.

Wright spent the better part of two decades overcoming her injury — she was left a paraplegic as the result of a 1988 motor vehicle accident — while raising four daughters as a single parent.

Then, in 2008, she decided to give curling a try.

Just a few months later, Wright was donning a Saskatchewan provincial jacket and playing at the TSX Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship in Lower Sackville, N.S. It was the first time Saskatchewan was represented at the wheelchair nationals.

Since taking up curling, Wright has embraced the sport on and off the ice. She achieved her Level 1 Officiation certification, and volunteered at the 2010 Saskatchewan Winter Games curling competition as a timer.
