In 2012, Kyle Payne was added to the Canadian roster after a team member broke a collarbone for the International Trophy tournament in Spain. He was only 17 at the time and Canada went on to win the gold medal. Payne has been a consistent presence on the national team ever since.
Payne says being on the national team and keeping his focus on 7-a-side football has been a life changing experience. It has developed him physically and been a unique education.
He considers himself fortunate that head coach Drew Ferguson travelled to Newfoundland to scout for players and promoted his presence there which Payne’s father discovered on the Internet. A month later he was invited to join the national team for that tournament in Barcelona.
Payne says his biggest inspiration for soccer is his father who got him involved in the sport as a youngster and helped him throughout his career.
