At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Devin Gotell swam in four events, making the finals in the 100-m backstroke where he finished 8th. Gotell announced his retirement from competitive sport shortly after the Games.

In 2015, Devin Gotell continued to prove himself as one of the most experienced racers on the Canadian para-swimming team. He followed up a strong 2014 season with three medals at the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games: gold in the 400-m freestyle and silver in the 200-m IM and 100-m backstroke. He started 2016 setting personal bests in all three backstroke distances.

Gotell is already a two-time Paralympian (2008 and 2012) reaching three finals over both Games and a three-time world championship team member (2006, 2010, 2013). He competed at the 2011 and 2014 Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships, winning a silver medal each time.

He produced his first big international splash with six medals at the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, which included a 15-second improvement on his world championship time in the 200-m individual medley.

PERSONAL

Born with a genetic condition called oculocutaneous albinism… His older sister Chelsey worked as the sport and athlete relations coordinator with TO2015 and was the first runner in the 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay…she retired in 2010 after a brilliant para-swimming career which featured 12 Paralympic medals and four world titles…They were both on the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games team together…
