Danial
Murphy

At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Danial Murphy competed in three events. His best result was 13th in the 200-m freestyle.

Murphy set a record-breaking pace qualifying for the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Toronto Parapan Am Games.  In Toronto, he reached five finals and set Canadian records in the 50-m freestyle and 50-m butterfly. In Glasgow, he swam in four events.

Murphy was firing on all cylinders in 2014. At the Pan Pacific Para-swimming Championships in Pasadena, Calif., he earned bronze medals in the 200-m freestyle and 50-m backstroke. He broke the Canadian record in his category in the 200-m free as well as the 100-m backstroke and helped Canada to a national mark in the 4×50-m medley relay.

At the 2013 IPC World Championships in Montreal, the freestyle specialist competed in four events. He reached two finals, placing seventh in the 100-m freestyle and eighth in the 200-m freestyle. He also set a personal best in the 200-m individual medley.

As a child. Murphy spent a lot of time in hospital and doctors were unsure whether he would walk. His favourite activity, besides swimming, is walking. He maintains a healthy lifestyle and he is grateful to the doctors, coaches and his family who encouraged him to play sports with other able-bodied children.

PERSONAL

Murphy has cerebral palsy. Started swimming at age nine after trying several other sports… Studies at Nova Scotia Community College in Dartmouth and would like a career in sport administration and coaching. He trains with the Sackville Waves Aquatic Team.
