Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games Canadian team member Billy Joe Marcoux is the guide and older brother of visually impaired para-alpine skier Mac Marcoux. Billy Joe began racing able-bodied alpine and transitioned to para-alpine to guide Mac as his brother’s vision deteriorated.

Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games Canadian team member Billy Joe Marcoux is the guide and older brother of visually impaired para-alpine skier Mac Marcoux. Billy Joe began racing able-bodied alpine and transitioned to para-alpine to guide Mac as his brother’s vision deteriorated. The duo had no experience skiing with radio communication or as a pair, but they learned together and in their first season on the World Cup circuit in 2012, when Mac was just 15 years old, they earned three World Cup podium finishes:  a silver medal in giant slalom at the world championships in La Molina, Spain and gold medals in slalom and giant slalom at the Canadian championships.

Marcoux says guiding his brother gives him a freedom that he might not otherwise get to experience.

When not skiing, Marcoux stock car races, BMX bikes, and works on anything with an engine.

NOTE: Due to a back injury sustained just before the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games, Billy Joe Marcoux was not able to race in Sochi, but still attended the Games with his parents and cheered on Mac and Team Canada.
