Dedicated coach brings fast results for Canadian riders

Only added to the Paralympic Winter Games program in 2014, Para snowboard is still very much in its early stages internationally.

But with help from the CPC NextGen fund, a solid program is now instilled for development. 
Dave Balne feels the consistent presence of a dedicated coach at competitions and training camps for Canada’s developmental team in Para snowboard is a key component of CPC’s NextGen funding.

‘’The impact of the NextGen funding has been massive,’’ confirmed Balne, Canada Snowboard’s NextGen coach since 2016. 

Canadian Paralympic Committee Statement on Minister Duncan’s Measures to Eliminate Harassment, Abuse, and Discrimination in Sport

 

Ottawa, June 19, 2018 – The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities announced today stronger measures to eliminate harassment, abuse, and discrimination in the Canadian sport system.

BESANÇON, France – Kamylle Frenette of Dieppe, N.B., made a smashing debut overseas on Sunday winning the silver medal in her inaugural Para triathlon World Cup race.

The 22-year-old Frenette was solid through the 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-kilometre run to finish with a time of 1:19:09 in the women’s PTS5 category.

National Academy produces depth for Canada in wheelchair basketball

Mike Frogley doesn’t mince words about the importance of CPC’s NextGen funding for Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s National Academy which provides a centralized training location for both the national teams and developmental squads

‘’If we didn’t have the Academy, these up and coming athletes wouldn’t have opportunity to train in a centralized program,’’ said Frogley, the National Academy Director and Head Coach for WBC. ‘’ If not for the Academy program we would not have a women’s team. And that team will be a serious medal contender at the world championships this year.’’

Canada Cup a major test for Canadian wheelchair rugby team

RICHMOND, B.C. – With the world championships set for Australia in August, Canada’s national wheelchair rugby team faces a serious test this week with the six-country Canada Cup at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Round-robin play runs from June 14-16 with the tournament finals taking place on June 17. Games will be live streamed at https://www.canadacupwcrugby.com/

Paralympian Search launches a new chapter in hockey player’s life

 

MONTREAL – A snowmobile accident recently left hockey prospect Vincent Boily with a partial paralysis. On Saturday, he began his search for a new sports dream at the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Paralympian Search held at the Institut national du sport du Québec.

Boily, who turned 18 last week, was playing AAA Midget for the St-Eustache Vikings when the accident happened in December. 

World record for Para swimmer Newkirk /Canadian women fourth at goalball worlds

 

MALMO, Sweden – Canada’s national women’s goalball team fell just short in its bid for an early ticket to the 2020 Paralympic Games on Friday finishing fourth overall at the world championships.

The top three in both men’s and women’s play qualified for Tokyo.

The Canadian women opened a busy day with an 11-5 loss to Russia in the semifinals. That set up the battle for the bronze and the Paralympic spot against Brazil. Again the Canadians fell 7-2 to their Pan Am rivals.

Breaking news! World record for Rivard; Canadian women in world goalball semis

BERLIN – Triple Paralympic Games champion Aurélie Rivard smashed her world record in the women’s 200-m freestyle on Thursday at the Para swimming World Series stop in Berlin. 

She clocked 2:10.57 in the morning to eclipse her previous S10 world mark of 2:10.98 set at this same venue in 2017. Then in the evening she delivered a sizzling 2:08.64.

Rivard and Tess Routliffe are the only two Canadians at the sixth and final stop on the circuit which concludes Sunday. Rivard is also in contention for the overall World Series women’s title.
