Former NHL'er named head coach of Canada's Para hockey development team
CALGARY – Hockey Canada announced Mike Foligno (Sudbury, Ont.) will coach Canada’s National Para Hockey Development Team for the remainder of the 2017-18 season, including the NextGen Prospects Camp and the 2018 Défi Sportif AlterGo.
Canadian bids farewell to Australian star with 1500m wheelchair victory at Commonwealth Games
GOLD COAST, Australia – The competition was billed as the final track race for Australian star Kurt Fearnley.
Canada’s Alexandre Dupont said farewell by winning the gold medal in the men’s T54 1500m wheelchair race ahead of Fearnley to highlight a four-medal day for Canada’s Para athletes at the Commonwealth Games.
Dupont, a triple gold medallist at the 2015 Parapan Am Games, clocked three minutes and 11.75 seconds upsetting highly-favored Fearnley second in 3:11.92. Jake Lappin of Australia won the bronze in 3:12.60.
Para swimmer Sarah Mehain wins silver at Commonwealth Games
Canada’s Para swimming contingent has contributed to the nation’s medal count early at the Commonwealth Games with Sarah Mehain earning a silver on the first day of competition at Gold Coast, Australia.
Mehain finished in second in the women’s S7 50m butterfly race, behind England’s Eleanor Robinson, with a time of 37.69 seconds. The 23-year-old was a gold medallist in the same discipline at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, and fourth at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. It is her first Commonwealth Games medal.
