Canadian Tire Jumpstart Games a memorable day for Paralympians

OTTAWA - More than 300 elementary students put aside their pencils and notebooks for hockey sticks and curling rocks on Tuesday at the University of Ottawa for the second Team Canada Jumpstart Games. 

It’s the first event of a two day Team Canada Celebration for Canadian Olympians and Paralympians that concludes Wednesday with receptions at Rideau Hall and Parliament Hill. 

Weekend round-up: Solid start for Canadian Para cyclists at World Cup season opener

OSTEND, Belgium – Tristen Chernove of Cranbrook, B.C., stepped two times to the podium and Michael Sametz of Calgary won time trial gold as Canada launched the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup season with several medal performances.

Sametz, the reigning time trial world champion, won the C3 men’s ITT event clocking 39 minutes and 09.42 seconds. He was more than 35 seconds ahead of his closest pursuer Benjamin Watson of Britain. There were 19 riders in the field.

Michael Edgson invests in giving back

‘’I consider myself a product of the Paralympic movement,’’ said Edgson, a 21-time Paralympic Games medallist from 1984 to 1992, which included 18 gold. ‘’It is important, giving back to an organization and a movement that helped me develop as an individual.

‘’At the same time it's something that I fully support and believe in.’’

Following his competitive career, Edgson was on the CPC’s board as finance director for four years. Then about two years ago he became involved with the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Paralympic Foundation of Canada.

Weekend round-up: Wheelchair fencers Pierre Mainville and Ryan Rousel win World Cup gold

MONTREAL – Pierre Mainville of St-Colomban, Que., and Ryan Rousel of Saskatoon each won a gold medal in sabre on Sunday at a World Cup wheelchair fencing event held at the Claude-Robillard Centre.

It was a first career World Cup win for both combatants.

Mainville, a three-time Paralympic Games team member, defeated Maxime Valet of France in the gold medal B Class final 15-9. He was 4-2 in pool play then advanced to the championship match with quarter-final and semifinal wins.

Paralympian Chelsey Gotell among 12 members of Federal Government’s new Working Group on Gender Equity

 

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities announced Tuesday a Working Group on Gender Equity in Sport to address the lack of gender equity in sport participation and sport leadership in Canada.  

The 12 members of the group, who are well-respected leaders with years of relevant experience and expertise, will share their insights with Minister Duncan on how to achieve gender equity in sport by 2035, a goal the Government of Canada announced in the 2018 Budget. 

Canadian bids farewell to Australian star with 1500m wheelchair victory at Commonwealth Games

 

GOLD COAST, Australia – The competition was billed as the final track race for Australian star Kurt Fearnley. 

Canada’s Alexandre Dupont said farewell by winning the gold medal in the men’s T54 1500m wheelchair race ahead of Fearnley to highlight a four-medal day for Canada’s Para athletes at the Commonwealth Games.

Dupont, a triple gold medallist at the 2015 Parapan Am Games, clocked three minutes and 11.75 seconds upsetting highly-favored Fearnley second in 3:11.92. Jake Lappin of Australia won the bronze in 3:12.60.

Para swimmer Sarah Mehain wins silver at Commonwealth Games

Canada’s Para swimming contingent has contributed to the nation’s medal count early at the Commonwealth Games with Sarah Mehain earning a silver on the first day of competition at Gold Coast, Australia. 

Mehain finished in second in the women’s S7 50m butterfly race, behind England’s Eleanor Robinson, with a time of 37.69 seconds. The 23-year-old was a gold medallist in the same discipline at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, and fourth at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. It is her first Commonwealth Games medal.
