The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities announced Tuesday a Working Group on Gender Equity in Sport to address the lack of gender equity in sport participation and sport leadership in Canada.
The 12 members of the group, who are well-respected leaders with years of relevant experience and expertise, will share their insights with Minister Duncan on how to achieve gender equity in sport by 2035, a goal the Government of Canada announced in the 2018 Budget.
Paralympian Chelsey Gotell is among the 12 individuals named to the Working Group. As chair of the Canadian Paralympic Committee Athlete Council, Gotell is the athlete representative on the Board of the CPC. She is also chairperson of the International Paralympic Committee’s Athletes’ Council. She competed at the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games in swimming and is a 12-time Paralympic medallist.
“I am pleased to announce the Working Group on Gender Equity in Sport, composed of 12 exceptional people ready to advance the Canadian sport system,” said Minister Duncan in a press release. “Building on the work by female leaders that have come before us, the working group will be instrumental in guiding policy decisions that will ultimately better serve the needs of women and girls in sport.
“Thanks to the leadership, experience and knowledge of all the members, I know that together, we will contribute to our government’s commitment to achieve gender equity in sport at every level by 2035.”
