Thomas Venos

Thomas Venos is ranked No. 60 as of October 2023 in the men’s singles world rankings and has won 10 ITF titles as well as the Birmingham Nationals singles and doubles titles on multiple occasions.

He made his multi-sport Games debut in 2019 at the Parapan American Games. He advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles with partner Jonathan Tremblay and to the second round in singles in men’s wheelchair play.

In 2022, he captured his first ITF Future Series win at the Alabama Open as the third-seed, beating the top-two on route to the title. He advanced to three finals on the circuit in 2023.

In 2023, he became the first Canadian ever to graduate from a United States college on a wheelchair tennis team. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Education.

In his time with the Crimson Tide starting in 2018, Venos helped the wheelchair tennis team claim two national titles, in 2019 and 2021. The 2020-21 season was his best, as he went undefeated in singles at Collegiate Nationals, not only helping Alabama to the team title but winning the individual singles championship as well.

To go along with his success at the collegiate level, he has been competing at events on the ITF Circuit, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 53 in 2022. He won two singles titles and four doubles titles internationally while a student at Alabama.

He has represented Canada internationally at the World Team Cup, the biggest team event in the sport of wheelchair tennis, making his debut in 2017 as part of Canada’s junior team.

Prior to his injury, Venos was an avid soccer and baseball player. He started playing wheelchair tennis after a spinal cord injury following a dirt bike accident. He was invited to try the sport by a representative of the BC Wheelchair Sports Association who was visiting the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver shortly after his accident.
