In her major Games debut, Sarah Mickey placed fourth in women’s discus with a personal best throw of 21.38 metres, less than a metre from the podium, at the 2019 Parapan Ams in Lima. That eclipsed the 21.30 she threw earlier in the year at a meet in Lethbridge.

Then a few months later, she launched a 20.98 throw for fifth spot in her world championships debut in Dubai.

She started in Para athletics in 2015. She played Para ice hockey for the Canadian women’s national team and the Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds. Prior to her illness she practised figure skating.

She began to lose the feeling in her lower body in 2014 due to Lyme disease. The condition is a bacterial infection that is spread by ticks.
