Canada wins silver medal at wheelchair curling world championships

GANGNEUNG, South Korea -  Canada won the silver medal at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship on Saturday.

The Canadians lost 6-2 to Norway in the final. It was a second straight silver and the third in four years.

Team Canada, consisted of skip (lead rocks) Mark Ideson of London, Ont., fourth Jon Thurston of Dunsford, Ont.,, third Ina Forrest of Spallumcheen, B.C. and second Gil Dash of Wolseley, Sask. The alternate was Chrissy Molnar, head coach Mick Lizmore, and team leader Kyle Paquette.

Karen O’Neill and CPC among 2024 IPC International Women’s Day Recognition Award winners

OTTAWA - The 2024 IPC International Women’s Day Recognition Award were unveiled Friday and winners included Karen O’Neill, the CEO of the Canadian Paralympic Committee for Leadership while the CPC itself was awarded the IPC Member prize. 
 
“I am so proud of the Canadian Paralympic Committee for its recognition in advancing gender equality and inclusivity and the support for all of our leadership efforts,’’ said O’Neill.

Canadian sitting volleyball team member Danielle Ellis lost her right leg below the knee due to cancer as a newborn. 

The 32-year-old never thought growing up in White Rock, B.C., that she could one day be a high-performance athlete, be on a national team and travel the world representing Canada.  But the world has change for people with a disability and for women in sports.

Mark Arendz wins second gold at Para biathlon world championships

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Mark Arendz of Hartsville, PEI was perfect in the shooting range Thursday on route to the gold medal in the men’s 12.5 kilometre men’s standing race at the inaugural Para biathlon world championships.

Natalie Wilkie also collected her second medal of the event with bronze in the women’s standing race.
Arendz, the 7.5 kilometre winner on Wednesday clocked 35 minutes 01.2 seconds for the win.

He beat Paralympic Games champion Benjamin Daviet of France, second in 36:40 while Grygorii Vovchynskyi of Ukraine was third in 37:01.7

Canada’s winter warriors on the prowl! Two gold at Para biathlon worlds, two big wins at wheelchair curling worlds

Canada is red hot right now on the international Para winter sports scene. 

In Prince George, B.C., the Canadians opened the inaugural Para biathlon world championships with two gold and a bronze. 

Over in Gangneung, South Korea, Canada posted two crucial victories to qualify directly for the semifinals at the wheelchair curling world championships.

Logjam atop standings at 2024 Wheelchair Curling World Championships

GANGNEUNG, South Korea – With one day of round robin play remaining, Canada is in a six-country logjam for top spot after two crucial and decisive victories Wednesday at the 2024 Wheelchair Curling World Championships.

The Canadians defeated Latvia, in first place entering Wednesday’s play, 9-2 then crushed Czechia 13-4. It was just what the doctor ordered for Canada after two losses on Tuesday.

Canada, China, South Korea, Latvia, Norway and Sweden are all tied for first place with six wins and three losses.

Double loss for Canada at wheelchair curling world championships

GANGNEUNG, South Korea – Canada lost 7-5 to the United States and 8-2 to Scotland on Tuesday at the 2024 Wheelchair Curling World Championships.

The Canadians are now in a four-way tie for fourth place in the preliminary round standings. The top six teams from the round robin advance to the playoffs, with the top two receiving a bye while the remaining four play in the first round.

“We made a lot of shots today,” said Canadian skip Mark Ideson of London, Ont., “We were just on the wrong side of the inch.”

Weekend wrap-up: Smooth start for Canada at Wheelchair Curling World Championships

GANGNEUNG, South Korea – Canada has opened the 2024 Wheelchair Curling World Championships with four wins in five games to stand second in the 12-country preliminary round standings.

Canada, last year’s silver medallists, opened the tournament Saturday with a 9-6 victory over South Korea then defeated Slovakia 6-4 and Italy 8-3 on Sunday. Its first loss was Monday morning to defending champions China 6-4 but Canada bounced back to beat Estonia 7-5 later Monday.
