CORTINA, Italy – Para snowboard cross lived up to its chaotic reputation Sunday as Canada’s Tyler Turner emerged with a bronze medal in the men’s lower limb 1 (SB-LL1) after an official review at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.

After winning the preliminaries on Saturday and his quarterfinal and semifinal on Sunday, Turner got tangled up with Japanese rider Junta Kosuda in the four-man Big Final for the medals.

Both riders fell, but Kosuda recovered faster to cross the finish line in third.

However, after review,  the judges determined Kosuda caused the collision. The Japanese rider was disqualified and Turner was awarded the bronze.

China’s Wu Zhongwei took the gold and American Noah Elliott the silver.

‘’The run in the final is going to way heavily on me for awhile but that’s racing,’’ said Turner, 37. ‘’We talk about it all the time, the chaos, the crashes and sometimes you have to be a part of it.’’

For Turner, these Games mean more than chasing medals. His wife and mother were among family members in the stands to watch him compete.

‘’I’m so proud to get the medal and to be able to share this moment with my family,’’ he said. ‘’It’s not easy for my family to get here from Western Canada. For them to be here and part of this is unbelievable.

‘’I can’t wait to go see them and celebrate.’’

In the same event, Chase Nicklin of Port Alberni, B.C., was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s SB-LL2, Alex Massie of Barrie, Ont., also reached the Big Final and took fourth spot, his best result in three Paralympic Games appearances.

Emanuel Perathoner of Italy won the gold, Ben Tudhope of the U.S. the silver and Jehyuk Lee of South Korea the bronze.

Philippe Nadreau of Blainville, Que., was eliminated in the quarters.

Sandrine Hamel of St-Sauveur, Que., was also ousted in the women’s quarters.

Snowboarding’s final event at the Games, the banked slalom, will take place Saturday.
