Smeenk’s bronze gets Canada on the board at Para athletics world championships
Julia Hanes sets Americas record in women's javelin to place fifth.
NEW DELHI (Athletics Canada) Canada is officially on the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships medal tally, courtesy of Austin Smeenk’s bronze medal in the men’s T34 400 metres.
The two-time Paralympic medallist finished with a time of 49.43 seconds.
“Medals are symbolic tokens of significance, to say that we’ve done something sweet. I was third in the world today. That’s pretty good. These medals are really, really hard fought for. Conditions here are tough. The athletes have really brought it,” Smeenk said.
Smeenk’s bronze medal is his third career World Para Athletics Championships medal, soon to be hanging on his wall next to his bronze medal in this event at the 2023 Championships, as well as the silver medal he won that year in the T34 100 metres.
“It’s very much an honor to do it for Canada and to do it for all the people that have helped individual sport. It takes a team to get us here,” Smeenk said.
