Alyssa Smyth and Andrew Woodrow named flag bearers for Closing Ceremony

SANTIAGO, Chile – Canada won three medals including gold for the men’s wheelchair basketball team and Para swimmer Alyssa Smyth on Friday at the 2025 Youth Parapan
American Games.

In addition, Smyth was selected as Canada’s co-flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony alongside boccia player Andrew Woodrow who won the silver medal on Friday in men’s BC4 competition.

In men’s wheelchair basketball, Team Canada held off a late push from Argentina to secure
a 61–54 victory and claim gold.

Ibrahim Odza led the way with a game-high 27 points, five assists, and four rebounds, while
Nasif Chowdhury delivered 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds.

Brandon Louie recorded eight points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists as Canada controlled
the tempo despite Argentina’s late surge.

“As soon as we changed our offence, how we wanted to be positioned on the floor, and adjusted a few spots for the guys, we got the looks we needed,” explained head coach Darrell Nordell.

Smyth collects second gold in Para swimming

Alyssa Smith earned her second gold medal in Para swimming with a victory in the junior women’s 100-metre breaststroke.

The visually impaired swimmer from Orangeville, Ont. topped the eight women final in 1:29.55.
She was also first on Thursday in the 100-metre freestyle.

Boccia delivers silver medal

In boccia, Andrew Woodrow dominated the men’s BC4 round robin with 8–1 and 6–1 wins, then defeated Geovanni Isaac Sasso of El Salvador in the semifinals.

In the gold medal match, he faced Brazil’s José Antonio dos Santos, taking an early lead before falling 6–2 to earn silver.

“This has been a great experience,’’ said Woodrow. ‘’I have exceeded my expectations. It was awesome representing Canada on the international scene, and I am proud to bring home a silver medal.”

Fatima Abderrahmane of Montreal in women’s BC3, Joe Philpott of St. John’s in men’s BC1 and Carter Plumb of Brampton, Ont. in men’s BC3 all placed fourth.

Canada has earned at least one medal in each of the five sports it has entered. Its medal count overall now stands at four gold, three silver and three bronze.The Games got underway last Friday in the Chilean capital and continue through to Sunday.

Canada has fielded a 38-member team in five sports: Para table tennis, wheelchair
basketball, goalball, boccia and Para swimming.

Para swimming ends Saturday and boccia pairs competition goes Saturday and Sunday to
conclude the Games.
