Personal Journey: What has the support of donors meant to you personally and professionally?

“There are two lenses through which I view the impact of donor support. The first is straightforward, athletes like me rely on financial backing for specialized equipment and the ability to dedicate ourselves entirely to training, which is vital to compete at local, national, and international levels. For Paralympic athletes, the commitment required often surpasses even that of our Olympic counterparts.

Though less noticeable, the second is just as powerful, the emotional and mental affirmation that donor support brings. It’s hard to describe, but as an athlete, I could genuinely feel the collective energy of Canadians rallying behind us. That feeling wasn’t just inspiring; it was transformative. It fueled my confidence and determination, propelling me to the pinnacle of international competition.”

The Impact of the Paralympic Movement: From your perspective, how has the growth of the Paralympic Movement been fueled by the generosity of donors? Where do you see their impact in the long term?

“Not long ago, Paralympic athletes could balance work alongside training and maintain a competitive global edge. But the landscape has changed, the bar has been raised, and to compete now, total dedication is non-negotiable. This is where donor support becomes irreplaceable.”

“Without the champions of our movement, those who believe in and invest in us, we risk losing our competitive edge and, more importantly, the chance to inspire future generations. Young Canadians who see athletes overcome barriers and achieve greatness are the next wave of dreamers and doers. Donor generosity fuels not only today’s athletes but also tomorrow’s ambitions.”

The Future: How do you envision the continued support of donors helping future athletes in the Paralympic Movement?

“The future I envision is built on a foundation of generosity. Significant, meaningful contributions will help ensure the sustainability and growth of the Paralympic Movement—breaking down financial barriers, opening doors to training, and fostering communities where athletes thrive.”

“But it’s not just about enormous contributions. As my dad always said, “No matter the size of the task, be it large or small, every opportunity is an opportunity to excel.” Large donations spark movements, while smaller contributions sustain them, allowing more Canadians to participate in this inclusion revolution.”
