Competition sets tone for 2025 season
MONTREAL — Josh Gautier, Alison Levine and Lance Cryderman were among the standout champions this week as Canada’s top boccia athletes gathered at the 2025 Défi sportif AlterGo National Open, an event packed with fierce battles and rising stars.
Gautier, of Niagara Falls, Ont., captured gold in the BC3 category with a 10-0 victory over Alex Lemaire of Kingsey Falls, Que. Building on last year’s bronze, Gautier credited his adaptability to floor conditions for his success.
“It all worked out. I’m looking forward to defending the title next year,” he said.
Montreal’s Levine dominated the BC4 field, going undefeated against a court of Paralympic veterans. Teammates Iulian Ciobanu and Marco Dispaltro, also of Montreal, earned silver and bronze, respectively.
Cryderman, from Val Caron, Ont., defended his BC1 title with a victory over longtime rival Hanif Mawji of Burnaby, B.C., while Kyle Scott of Hamilton, Ont., impressed by claiming bronze.
In BC2 action, Olivier Roy of Québec City edged out rival Olivier Dussault for gold, with Danik Allard of Bois-des-Filion, Que., taking bronze.
Montreal’s Ariane Dubuc seized gold in the BC5 division, where recent classification changes reshaped the competitive landscape. Mégane Ravary captured bronze after a dramatic 5-3 win over Marc-Antoine Goupil.
In the Open class, Montreal’s Richard Brochu continued his dominance by adding another gold medal to his collection. Teammates Nancie Caldwell and Ariane Soulard completed the podium.
Theresa McLeod of Moncton, N.B., captured the event’s spirit, noting, “We appreciate the competition on the court but we also all want to be lifted up together, as a collective.”
