For the past eight years, Canada’s Women’s Sitting Volleyball team has been relentlessly climbing the ranks, and this year, they enter the Paris 2024 Paralympics as the top-ranked team in the world.
The journey to the summit has been marked by determination and progress. After finishing seventh at Rio 2016, the team made significant strides with a best-ever fourth-place finish at Tokyo 2020. Now, in Paris, they are hungry for more, and Canadians have the chance to witness their historic quest by streaming the team’s games at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Lori Okimura, President of World ParaVolley, confirmed that the International Paralympic Committee has committed to enhanced coverage of the Paralympic Sitting Volleyball competition at Paris 2024. This coverage will include all matches from Thursday, August 29, through to the women’s gold medal finals on Saturday, September 7.
Canada’s CBC and Radio-Canada, not only took the lead in broadcasting this exciting news but also led pioneering the use of advanced camera technology to ensure fans don’t miss a moment of the action. This initiative underscores the importance of making Paralympic sports more accessible and visible to audiences around the world.
While the team has been rigorously preparing on the court, they’ve also been active advocates for the Paralympic Movement off the court. Three-time Paralympian Heidi Peters and National Team Head Coach Nicole Ban have used their podcast, Take a Seat, as a platform to raise awareness about Para sport and athletes, while also educating their audience on the significance of the Paralympic Movement and the power of inclusive language.
Beyond the podcast, the team members have harnessed the power of social media to promote the sport and elevate the Paralympic Games. Paris 2024 debutant Allison Lang, along with her teammates, have been spotted all over Instagram sporting their “Let’s make the Paralympics a household name” t-shirts, a campaign they initiated to amplify the visibility of the Paralympic Movement.
These t-shirts have become a powerful tool in generating excitement for the Paralympic Games among Canadians, who are tuning in to CBC and Radio-Canada to cheer on the Canadian Paralympic Team.
As the Paris 2024 Paralympics unfold, Canada’s Women’s Sitting Volleyball team is not only competing for medals but also for a broader mission—to ensure that the Paralympics become a household name across the nation.
