Canada opens with two wins at Paralympic qualifier

Sitting volleyball team defeats Slovenia and Germany

HALIFAX (Volleyball Canada) – Canada defeated Slovenia 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-15) in the opener of the Women's Paralympic Qualifier at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.

“I think the match went as well as we could have planned. There were some ups and downs, but we’re really working on finding that consistency,” said head coach Nicole Ban.

The second match was not as smooth for Canada, but they came out with the 3-1 win over Germany.

“I think it was a good match to get the nerves out,” said Ban. “We definitely played a little tight at times, but it was good to be able to work through those moments and push under pressure.

‘’They play a different style than we are used to [Canada has not played Germany in recent years]. They are very scrappy. We have to continue to play our style and continue to do so tomorrow against Ukraine.”

“Whenever we called a time out to reset, they came out and executed. I’m really proud of them for that.”

The winner of the tournament, which runs to Saturday, punches a ticket to Tokyo 2020.
