Canada erupts for six in sixth to remain undefeated in wheelchair curling at the Paralympic Winter Games
Jon Thurston delivers crushing blow with double take-out
CORTINA, Italy – Canada broke open a tight game with six points in the sixth end to defeat Norway 9-2 in preliminary round wheelchair curling action Sunday night at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.
It was Canada’s second win of the day after a 5-4 victory over Great Britain on Sunday morning.
On Sunday night, the shot of the game, perhaps the tournament, came from third Jon Thurston, whose double takeout in the sixth end helped spark the six-point explosion that put Canada ahead 9-2. Norway then conceded the match.
‘’We got a bit of an opening from their previous shot, and the coaches saw a possibility,’’ said Thurston, from Dunsford, Ont. ‘’I threw the weight we wanted; the rock ran the way we wanted, and I was just ecstatic to make that shot.’’
Joining Thurston on the ice were lead Collinda Joseph of Stittsville, Ont., second Ina Forrest of Spallumcheen, B.C., and skip Mark Ideson of London, Ont.
After day two, Canada, Sweden and China are all 3-0 in the 10-country tournament.
‘’We’re feeling pretty good,’’ said Ideson, at hos fourth Games. ‘’We’re leaning the surface, getting used to the weight and finding the tricky lines.
‘’It’s still a work in progress.’’
Canada is back in action Monday morning against Latvia (1-2), its only match of the day.
