Canada blanks Japan 14-0 in Para ice hockey Auren Halbert scores four goals
MILAN, Italy – Dominic Cozzolino and Auren Halbert each scored a hat trick contributing to Canada’s 14-0 victory against Japan on Monday in men’s Para ice hockey.
Halbert scored 9:44 into the third period and added a fourth goal with 2:15 left in the game. He also contributed three assists in his second career Paralympic game.
Cozzolino scored his third goal with only 6.4 seconds left in the second period.
“We stuck to our game plan,” said Cozzolino. “It makes us successful. We take it one shift at a time, and remain in the moment. Regardless of the score, or what time it is in the game, we want to bring that same level of intensity and play that Canadian hockey.”
Tyler McGregor and James Dunn scored two goals, with Adam Dixon, Vincent Boily, and Liam Hickey contributed one each.
McGregor opened up the game only 0:39 into the start with a 6-0 lead in the first period, following with three assists. The team scored three goals in the second and five goals in the third.
Anton Jacobs-Webb, playing his 100th career national team game, contributed four assists.
Japan was limited to two shots, both in the first period.
“That was something we worked on right from the get go back in August,” said head coach Boris Rybalka. “We revamped the D-zone, we revamped the neutral zone, we revamped the forecheck, which ironically all ties in the good solid defensive play so that’s been a huge positive and now the guys believe in it and it shows on the ice.”
Team Canada plays Czechia on Tuesday at 11:05 am EST in the last group stage game.
