BILL C-81 – ACCESSIBLE CANADA ACT

The Accessible Canada Act was developed to remove the barriers to inclusion that persons with disabilities face in society everyday

Accessibility standards and regulations in priority areas such as employment, the built environment and the delivery of programs and services

CANADA’S TRUTH & RECONCILIATION CALLS TO ACTION

A commitment between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to establishing new relationships embedded in mutual recognition and respect that will help forge a brighter future. It is a holistic response to the Indian Residential School legacy and the injustice and harm experienced by Indigenous peoples.

While the Truth & Reconciliation Calls to Action, which include specific actions for sport and recreation, were created within national contexts, it is equally important to understand the status and recognition for Indigenous peoples within provincial systems.

Sports and Reconciliation named 5 calls to action:

87.Tell stories of Indigenous athletes.

88.Ensure Indigenous Long-Term Participant Development and growth leading to a vibrant well funded NAIG.

89.Amend the Physical Activity and Sport Act to support reconciliation, reduce barriers and increase opportunities and capacity for Indigenous athletes to pursue excellence.

90. National sports policies, programs, and initiatives are inclusive of Indigenous peoples

91. With hosting opportunities, Indigenous peoples are engaged and the territorial protocols are respected

CANADIAN SPORT POLICY

The Canadian Sport Policy has set the direction for the period 2012-2022 for all governments, institutions and organizations that are committed to realizing the positive impacts of sport on individuals, communities and society. It envisions a dynamic and innovative culture that promotes and celebrates participation and excellence in sport.

The ultimate aspiration of the Paralympic Movement has been identified as: ‘To make for a more inclusive society for people with an impairment through Para sport’. This aspiration serves as one of the five strategic priorities for the IPC.

The APC has developed targeted goals towards:

  • Facilitating women in sport activities and opportunities to build female leadership within NPCs

Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the UN developed Agenda 2030 which emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.

Of the 17 UN Goals for Sustainable Development, 6 Goals align closely with our work and our commitment to ensure persons with a disability are represented and acknowledged in actions towards sustainable development

IOC AGENDA 2020

Olympic Agenda 2020 is the strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement to strengthen the Olympic Games and strengthen sport in society.
