Sofia Fassi-Fehri, a Canadian wheelchair basketball player, has been selected to represent Canada at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, marking her first appearance at the Paralympic Games. Originally from Morocco, Fassi-Fehri moved to Montreal at age 18 after spending two years in Moncton, New Brunswick, as a youngster and completing high school in Morocco.
Fassi-Fehri’s journey into wheelchair basketball began as part of her rehabilitation after a 2013 motorcycle accident left her paralyzed from the chest down and with paralysis in her right shoulder. Wheelchair basketball became an integral part of her recovery and she quickly took to the sport. In 2022, she was invited to attend a national team camp and just three months later, she won gold at her first Americas Cup with the Canadian national team.
In 2023, Fassi-Fehri made her debut at the World Championships, where Canada finished in fifth place. Later that year, she competed at the Parapan American Games and helped Canada secure a second-place finish, earning a silver medal. Her strong performances continued at the Paralympic Games qualifier in April 2024, ensuring her spot on the team for Paris.
Academically, Fassi-Fehri holds a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from l’École Polytechnique Montréal, which she completed in 2013. Her dedication to both her sport and education exemplifies her resilience and determination.
Fassi-Fehri’s selection for the Paris 2024 Paralympics is a testament to her hard work and the support of her family, coaches, and teammates. She continues to build on her experiences and successes, aiming to achieve even greater results in Paris.
