Para nordic skiing
Visually impaired Para nordic skier Jesse Bachinsky has competed on the World Cup circuit since 2017.
He launched the 2025-26 season with a cross country skiing World Cup career best fifth place finish in the mass start at the opening stop in Canmore, Alta., which also served as a selection event for the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games team.
Bachinsky competes with a guide, usually Levi Nadlersmith, who skis ahead and provides direction via radio communication.
A major highlight for 2024-25 was an eighth place in the 10 kilometre at the Paralympic Games test event in Val di Fiemme, Italy.
Bachinsky’s first experience with skiing came at age 16 when a local coach introduced him to cross-country skiing — he immediately took to the sport. Started competing initially in able-bodied races before focusing on Para nordic competition.
A multi medallist at the Canada Winter Games, Bachinsky, a 2019 world championship team member, advocates for athletes with disabilities and maintains an active lifestyle in and out of competition.
Bachinsky was born with no central vision and by the age of 15 was further diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease that also took his peripheral vision.
