Gary Cormack, born on May 27, 1950, in Kenora, Ontario, was a dedicated Canadian wheelchair curler. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1984, Gary transitioned from able-bodied curling to Wheelchair curling, taking wheelchair curling in the fall of 2002. His disease had prevented him from playing for nearly twenty years, but through Wheelchair curling he was able to rekindle his passion and dedication to the sport.
One of Gary’s most notable achievements was winning the gold medal at the Torino 2006 Winter Paralympics in Italy, where Wheelchair curling debuted in the Paralympic Games. As a key member of Team Canada, Gary helped secure this historic victory, marking a significant milestone not only for his team but also for the sport’s inclusion on the Paralympic stage. He also competed in multiple World Wheelchair Curling Championships, proudly representing Canada and contributing to the team’s strong performances internationally. Closer to home, he was a prominent figure in British Columbia’s wheelchair curling scene, leading his team to a silver medal at the 2013 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.
Gary passed away in November 2024, leaving a legacy of dedication and passion for wheelchair curling in Canada.
