Missing the cut for Canada’s 2022 Paralympic Winter Games Para ice hockey team was a turning point in Auren Halbert’s career. After making his first world championship team in 2021, he described his absence from Beijing 2022 among the most disappointing experiences of his career. But it also motivated him to come back stronger than ever to contend for a spot on the 2026 team.
In the last quadrennial, Halbert has been on Team Canada at all three world championships with silver in 2023 and 2025 and gold in 2024. He was a +11 at Buffalo 2025. At the 2024 worlds in Calgary he was tied for second in the +/- at +16 and added a goal and three assists. He registered a goal and an assist in 2023.
He credits his improvement over the past three seasons to intense summer training, more ice time and extensive work in the gym with a strength and conditioning coach.
Born with a shortened foot that required amputation, he discovered Para ice hockey around age 8 after seeing it on TV and was hooked immediately. He said playing the sport felt natural and, for the first time, he felt he truly belonged. Halbert played with the Calgary Sledge Hockey Association (CSHA).
As a teenager his family moved to Pittsburgh but that didn’t interrupt his Para hockey development. He continued to compete with club teams and played in over 70 games per season in his four-year stay in the U.S. before returning to Calgary.
