Santiago 2023 Day 3 Preview: Canadian Parapan Am Team looking for more victories

SANTIAGO – The Santiago 2023 Parapan Am Games heads into its third day of action on Monday November 20, with Canadian athletes well into competition in many sports. Play continues across several team sports and individual tournaments, with medals also up for grabs in Para swimming and Shooting Para sport. Canadians will be competing in nine sports on Day 3:

Alexandre Hayward, Nathan Clement lead cycling charge with gold at 2023 Parapan Am Games

SANTIAGO – Alexandre Hayward of Quispamsis, N.B. and Nathan Clement of West Vancouver each won gold in their respective road time trials Sunday as Para cycling action got underway at the 2023 Parapan American Games.

Mike Sametz of Calgary and Charles Moreau of Victoriaville, Que. made it a four-medal day for Canada, each adding a bronze.

SANTIAGO – The Canadian national anthem was played at the Santiago 2023 Parapan Am Games for the first time on Saturday, as Para swimmer Ruby Stevens collected Canada’s first gold medal on day one. Para table tennis veteran Stephanie Chan earlier won the country’s opening medal of the Games, a bronze, while Fernando Lu and Tyson MacDonald added two more podiums.  

At age 66, Chan is the oldest member of the Canadian Parapan Am Team, while Lu is the youngest at age 16. Both are now Santiago 2023 medallists, on the same day.

Ruby Stevens wins Canada’s first gold medal at 2023 Parapan Am Games

SANTIAGO – Ruby Stevens of Scarborough, Ont. earned Canada’s first gold medal at the 2023 Parapan American Games on Saturday with a Para swimming victory in the women’s S6 100-metre backstroke.

Her triumph highlighted a three-medal day for the Canadian swim team. Fernando Lu of Burnaby, B.C., the youngest athlete on the entire Canadian Parapan Am Team at 16, took silver in the men’s S10 50 freestyle and Tyson MacDonald of Tillsonburg, Ont. added bronze in the men’s S14 200 freestyle.

Stephanie Chan wins Canada’s first medal at 2023 Parapan American Games

SANTIAGO – Stephanie Chan of Vancouver collected her sixth career Parapan Am Games medal on Saturday earning a bronze in the women’s singles S6-7 combined class in Para table tennis.

Chan, Canada's oldest athlete at 66, lost her semifinal match to arch-rival Giselle Munoz of Spain 11-1, 11-4, 11-3. The 39-year-old Munoz, like Chan, has medalled in the event at the last four Games.
